Without the tie, the collar would be left to stand out. It is best to allow the collar to stand out well by ensuring the collar of your shirt is neat, well starched and ironed. This gives a sharp and attractive appearance to your look despite the absence of the tie.

There are other great accessories one can put on to couch the absence of a tie when suiting up. Some of such accessories include the pocket square, cuff-links, wristwatch, lapel pin and so on.
Seeing that the shirt is not bound by a tie, it is advisable to unbutton the first or first two buttons on your shirt. The undershirt or singlet must be kept hidden to avoid a messy or overcrowded appearance.
This factor applies to both the suit and the shirt to be put on. Solid colors like grey, black or navy blue ought to be considered and in terms of combination, colors with a contrasting effect are more advisable. i.e. black shirt with a grey suit, or a grey shirt with a navy blue suit.
The environment or surroundings play a big role in confirming how well you have suited up without a tie.
